TMJD Massage therapy

TMJD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. The temporomandibular joint is the medical name given to one of the most well used joints in the human body – the Jaw Joint.

TMJ occurs when the lower jaw becomes displaced from its correct position and dislocates. This can be caused by a trauma to the mouth, a misaligned bite or if a person persistently grinds their teeth over a long period of time.

If the TMJ becomes dysfunctional and starts to wear on the articulating surfaces of the joint, the area becomes inflamed and painful. This is often accompanied by a loud clicking sound, an inability to open the mouth wide and muscular tension in the area. All of these symptoms can in some cases lead to migraines and chronic pain.

We will focus on the structures and muscles associated with the jaw joint. By using various massage techniques, stretches and even treating the muscles inside the mouth this therapy can help to reduce jaw pain, headaches and relieve symptoms of head fuzziness.

Even if you don’t have diagnosed TMJD, this type of treatment can be very beneficial for those who suffer from upper neck pain, facial aches or headaches and migraines.
